Johnsons Landing Retreat Center values its historical roots and places great importance on honoring the indigenous peoples who originally inhabited the land. By recognizing the Sinixt and Ktunaxa communities, who have maintained a profound relationship with the land and its spirits for generations, the center pays homage to their enduring presence and care. As newcomers, there is a dedication to listening, observing, and learning from both the land and its original stewards, with the aim of becoming responsible caretakers and coexisting harmoniously with the environment and its rich heritage.

Local archaeological findings indicate that people have been inhabiting the area known as Johnsons Landing for over 5000 years. The final indigenous inhabitant, named Kootenay Joe, resided in the area, which is who the mountain and high ridge to the east overlooking the residence was named after.
Moving forward in time we find stories of Algot Johnson, a Swedish immigrant, who found himself driven to the local shore in 1901 due to a storm. He decided to venture out, discovered a picturesque beach-land, and eventually became the pioneering homesteader of the community.
Local residents then tell of Pat and Perry Bauer establishing their family’s residence on what is now the Retreat Center property, constructing the primary barn that currently serves as our group area for gatherings and events.
Alphonse Bouchard purchased the property next in 1992 and transformed it into the Golden Eagle Retreat center, catering to individuals seeking to engage in learning, healing, recreation, and personal development.
In 1998, Richard Ortega purchased the Retreat Center to celebrate his 50th birthday. Over the following 24 years, he and Angele organized retreats, workshops, and various programs, while also constructing the dome and cabins and making continuous improvements to the center.
