A Brief History of our Centre

2,500+BC

Archaeological findings indicate that people have been inhabiting the area known as Johnsons Landing for over 5000 years. The final indigenous inhabitant, Kootenay Joe, resided in the area, which was marked by the high ridge to the east.

1901

Algot Johnson, a Swedish immigrant, found himself driven to shore in 1901 due to a storm. He decided to venture out, discovered a picturesque beachland, and eventually became the pioneering homesteader of the community.

Pat and Perry Bower established their family's residence on this property, constructing the primary barn that currently serves as a communal area for gatherings and events.

1992

Alphonse purchased the property in 1992 and transformed it into the Golden Eagle Retreat center, catering to individuals seeking to engage in learning, healing, recreation, and personal development.

1998

In 1998, Richard acquired the Retreat Center to celebrate his 50th birthday. Over the following 24 years, he organized retreats, workshops, and various programs, while also constructing the dome and cabins and making continuous improvements to the center.

2022

Denys and Monika Lawrence, along with Robyn Birdsong, acquired the retreat in 2022. Subsequently, significant enhancements have been made to the garden and the overall property. Remaining true to the tradition of wellness retreats, the trio has exciting and ambitious plans for the future of the retreat.
