Plant Medicine

How can we truly hear the messages that plant medicines convey? This blog offers insights into fostering a connection with the natural world and cultivating a sustainable, reciprocal mindset when engaging with our plant allies. By nurturing this relationship, we can deepen our understanding and appreciation of the wisdom that nature has to offer.

When we think of plant medicine, our minds often jump to the powerful effects of substances like ayahuasca or psilocybin. However, plant medicine encompasses the entire range of flora and fauna, from the calming properties of chamomile and lavender to the healing qualities of turmeric and reishi, the energy and nutrients given from squashes and broccoli, and the sweetness of our berries. Each plant has its own medicine, and when we create a reciprocal and respectful relationship with these plants, what they can offer to us is their specific healing gifts. The question is how do we choose the medicine we work with, or even better, how do we listen when these medicines call to us?

Every plant we encounter engages our senses in unique ways. The scent of the mock orange flowers, the taste and crunch of the apple, the vivid colours we see in leaves, the softness of a rose pedal on our fingertips and although we may not always be able to hear them, there is a frequency released from each one in turn that plays on our hearing senses. These nuanced interactions affect us differently; some people may savor cherries more than beets, while others might prefer the scent of sweet tobacco over daisies. These medicines communicate with us in many different ways, asking us to engage with them. They each have their own story.

Engage with the plants

This planet is rich with plant life, and the vegetation we encounter—whether in our homes, during our travels, or in our gardens—are not put in our path by accident. The plants we choose to cultivate, those passed down from our grandparents, and even gifts from friends seem to find their way to us for a reason. There is an energetic bond that is created between these living entities and their spirits, when we listen to our senses, we can use them with respect and moderation to gain insight and balance with own our issues.

It is a practice to become tuned in to our own systems and to our plant allies energetics, and in time it allows us to discern which ones are beneficial and which might not work with us. It’s important to remember that these relationships are dynamic; what has been effective for years can suddenly change depending on how your communication is. The plants will keep you honest and humble, as they each have their own lessons attached to their medicine.

Our connection with plants can be compared to how we interact with other people. These are living entities with their own needs, and by viewing them through a lens of compassion and understanding, we can foster the nurturing relationships necessary for healing. Embracing this perspective allows us to appreciate the intricate bond we share with the natural world.

For an example, we may often feel a natural affinity for chamomile, yet we may not have taken the steps to truly explore its potential. While we might have glimpsed it in a friend’s garden or enjoyed a cup of chamomile tea occasionally, we haven’t invested the time to nurture that connection. Much like a budding friendship, developing a relationship with this plant requires effort. This journey could begin with online research to learn about others’ experiences, followed by planting chamomile in our own garden to gain our own wisdom. As we observe its growth and blooming process, we engage with it at each stage, harvesting mindfully and respecting its needs. Over time, as we incorporate chamomile into our lives through tinctures or tea, we cultivate a deeper friendship with it. This type of relationship can lead to a profound understanding of both the plant and ourselves. It is all very real, and this kind of care for our plant medicines could take us to a new evolution of healing in ourselves and with the plant world around us.

Medicine is not a fixed entity; it is a vibrant and evolving force. It possesses a unique consciousness that interacts with our own, urging us to adopt a more relational perspective rather than viewing it merely as a tool for our convenience. Embrace these living medicines, these plants that can awaken your mind and senses, guiding you toward a space where both you and they can thrive in harmony and healing.
